In 2001, she set up her own studio, and regularly participates in joint exhibitions and competitions, achieving a Special Mention in 2004 in the National Art Competition organised by the Malta Society for Arts, Manufactures and Commerce. In 2004 she enrolled in a distance BA degree course at the Glasgow School of Art and graduated in 2008.
Barbara makes both functional and exhibition work, and prefers stoneware for the strength and appearance of the functional ware. Her exhibition and non-functional pieces are often Raku fired, although she also uses earthenware and stoneware, depending on the vision she has of the creation.
